Working on Feng Office 2

By 25 July, 2011July 25th, 202445 Comments

We are now working on Feng Office 2 and we hope to release it in the last quarter of 2011, but we’d still like to share this news with all of you.

Feng Office 2 will have many changes such as Management systems for Plug-ins and an API (Application Programming Interface) – a particular set of rules and specifications that software programs can follow to communicate with each other. It will serve as an interface between different external software programs and Feng Office.

Another new function will be the synchronization with the Google Calendar.

Hope you like these new changes. We will keep you posted on any news regarding Feng Office 2.

If you have not tried Feng Office visit our site and fill up the form for a Free Trial.

Very nice! Sounds like some great steps forward!

  • Murz says:

Very good! Waiting for new versions. Will you share alpha and beta versions for testing and bug reporting before official stable release?

  • chedes says:

Thank you both, we are very excited about this New Version.
Yes we will be testing. Please let me know if your interested in becoming part of the beta testing.

  • Murz says:

Yes, I want to be the beta-tester. Will be good to have online beta version for public access (like current demo), and download-able sources (or svn/git access) for testing on my server and creating/testing patches.

  • Andy says:

Sure. I’d be happy to help beta test new releases.

  • chedes says:

Hi to both of you and thank you for your interest in being part of the beta testing. We will be contacting you as soon as we start the testing. Have a nice day!

  • Alex says:

Can we hope to finally have a real integration of Gelsheet or another spreadsheet app in Fengoffice ? To my opinion, that is the only real missing feature and you are so close to have it … Please just integrate Gelsheet.

  • chedes says:

Hi Alex. While the integration of Gelsheet is in our plans for the future it won’t be avaliable for Feng Ofice 2.0. We are working on it and planning its intergation most certainly for Feng Office 2.1. Please be patient. Have a great day!

  • Murz says:

Also, if you improve translate interface (do the online tool for search/updating records), I can help you with translating to Russian.

  • chedes says:

    Great! thank you Murz.
To everybody that offered to be part of the Beta Testing, you will receive an email form someone from our Developing Team.

  • Yannick says:

Hi, If it’s not to late, I’d be part of Beta testing too. This should allow me to have an early access to the new API and prepare the update AND/OR code some plugin.
Will be the sync stuff part of fengoffice 2.0 (apart the google calendar sync)?

  • chedes says:

Hi Yannick. Don’t worry, it’s not too late. As soon as we have the beta version ready the developement team will contact you. Have a nice day!

  • Federico says:

    Hello Chedes,
if you include me in beta program, I can test the italian translation.
    Regards, Federico

  • Chad says:

Are you guys looking into using external CSS stylesheets instead of inline styles for every single element in the entire application? I wouldn’t be surprised if that change would cut the codebase in half.

  • Aaron says:

I will be happy to test Feng 2. Will Feng 2 continue to be open source and available to the community?

  • PHPepe says:

    Hi guys,
Gelsheet will be released as a Feng2 Plugin after the first Feng2-Core release.
    @Chad:
We are planning to do that in future version. Currently feng is very dependent on ExtJs that builds the DOM very complex and with many inline-styles.
    @Aron
    Yes, it will be opensource.
    Regards,
    Pepe.

  • Mark says:

I would also like to help with beta.

  • Qaiser Chaudhry says:

Thank you for the amazing work you guys are doing. I am interested in beta testing Feng2 if/when you open that up.

  • chedes says:

    Thank you Qaiser.
We will contact everyone as soon as we are ready to start the beta testing phase.

  • raphi says:

    Hi
Very interested to be a beta tester..
    thx

  • Nexell says:

    Hi Feng team,
We are evaluating Feng and will most probably end up using it.
A BIG killer for us is the time tracking and the reporting.
PLEASE improve reporting of time. The present reporting is way too basic and the reporting module does not include any data on timetracks NOR time associated to tasks.
I think (hope) it should be straight forward to add this functionality as it is mostly existing.
    Also:
    – Invoicing ?
    – Expenses ?
    – Bug tracker / tickets.
Great product & txs for the consideration.

  • marcos says:

Hi Nexell, thanks for getting in touch with us.
Reporting of time will be improved on Feng 2.0. Now you will be able to generate reports that contrast the estimated hours vs. the hours that a project really took.
Also, there will be a more complex system but that will be only available for customization. This will include Expenses. Bug tracker/tickets is also on the mid term roadmap.
We are still evaluating the best strategy for Invoicing, as we have no sponsors for the project.
If you are interested in sponsoring any of these modules, or want assistance to get better information on the reports, you can always get in touch with our team at sales@fengoffice.com .
Please let us know if you need any more information or assistance.
    Have a nice day!

  • Ilicz says:

I volunteer to work on Czech translation of the project 🙂

  • Matt Esau says:

I’d like to be a part of testing as well. Been using Feng for about two years.

  • Chester says:

I would like to take part in the testing as well.

  • Olivier Labb says:

As we used Feng a lot, my partner would like me to build a “visual representation of projects/milestones/task” on a calandar like MS Project does.
Should I wait for FO2 before starting on this?

  • kkaal says:

    Hi Feng Team,
we are using Feng in the day-to-day work. And we are excited.
I would be happy to do some beta testing as soon as a beta is out.
Plse put me on your list.
    Thanks

  • chedes says:

    Hi,
@chester and @kkaal you will be contacted to be part of the beta testing.
@Olivier Labb the visual representation of projects will change but not the one for milestones and tasks. Please let me know if this helps you or which information you need.

  • Kris says:

Would be awesome if i was invited to the beta too! I was looking for alternatives to basecamp and came across feng office. Installed it on my webhost and immediately fell in love.
Will Feng Office 2 remain opensource and can be hosted on our own webserver?

  • I would like to be in beta program too. I can help with Lithuanian translation.

  • chedes says:

    Hi @Kris,
Feng Office 2.0 will remain opensource and you will be able to host it on your webserver.
@kris and @Aidas you both will be included as beta-testers.
    Have a nice day!

  • rx2 says:

We use Feng daily but the lack of Gantt is an issue and we are in the middle of evaluating whether or not to move to Codendi or Redmine. Will FO2 have Gantt?
Would love to be part of the beta test to further evaluate our options.

  • chedes says:

Hi @rx2, in the version we are going to launch for beta testing there won’t be a Gantt module, but we are working on it. Are you still interested in being part of the beta test?

  • rx2 says:

Yes, if it is being worked on absolutely. We realize the API would allow an external Gantt as well which is promising. So being part of the beta would be great.
We do a lot of Template work as well, with custom objects and parameters and would test that out very thoroughly.

  • chedes says:

@rx2 you will be contacted for beta testing. Hope you like it. Have a nice day.

  • David Oster says:

I would like to congratulate you about this excellent product.
I have just installed version 1.7.5 for a customer of mine (http://o.eclinic.gr) and they’re absolutely thrilled with the environment, flexibility and ease of use.
I have a few questions though,
    1) Is an upgrade path viable from 1.7.5 to 2.x or shall I suggest to my customer to wait till ver. 2.x comes out?
    2) Are you planning to have a spreadsheet application within?
    3) Exactly how do you plan to support Google Calendar? Is it going to be a bidirectional sync?
    4) Since I am a developer, where do I find information about plugin coding for ver. 17.5 and/or 2.x?

  • chedes says:

    Hi David.
Following are the answers to each of your questions.
    1) There will be an easy way to upgrade from 1.7.5 to 2, so don’t worry about waiting for the release of Feng 2.
    2) Spreadsheet will be a plug-in for Feng 2 but it won’t be ready for the launch of Feng 2. We are still working on it.
    3) Yes, it will be bidirectional. And as the spreadsheet, it will be a plug-in that will be released later.
    4) It’s under development.
Hope this clears all your doubts.
    Have a nice day!

  • msuzenne says:

    Hi,
first thanks for all the work already done : it’s a really worthy product (since the beginnings as OpenGoo ;-))
Second, I would like to ask everyone here for a specific question regarding Feng 2 : I hear here about “custom objects” (@rx2) and would like to know several things :
    1) is this a feature of feng 2 already available in the beta and planned in the formal release ?
    2) is this a possibility of creating our own objects type in addition to existing ones (tasks, notes, events, docs, projects, … ) with custom properties that will be available to the report module ?
    3) if this is the case, are custom objects types created integrated as tabs in the interface and as shortcut in the “new” button, along with existing object’s types ?
These are important for us since we use notes objects with custom properties for managing specific types suiting our needs.
But this hack lacks clean ergonomy (lots of properties for our different objects types not related to each other and cumbersome in terms of ergonomy : we have to visually distinguish which custom property currently apply amongs lots of ones, and fullfill only the right ones !)
Thanks in advance for all your answers.
    Best regards,
    Micka

    Hi friends,
    what is going on here?
    Nothing?
    Stands still the project?
    I am very exited.
    Regards
    Martin

  • Conrado says:

    Hi Martin.
We are working hard to realease the new version.
    Very good news coming soon.
    Thanks for asking!

  • Maciek says:

How to report tasks in FO 2 Community Edition???

  • Jose says:

it is possible to send one email with link to all subscribers when someone upload/create or modify one document?

  • Conrado says:

    Hi Jose,
Yes, that is possible. But that is a question more fit for the support team or the forum than this blog post.
Also, it is probably on the wiki.
