Version 3.7.0 (final) released

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019. By: Conrado Vina

A few moments ago we released the final version of Feng Office 3.7.0.

Most notably, version 3.7 now upports PHP7.

There are many more improvements over previous versions. See this post from October to learn about the highlights of the latest upgrades, and the changelog section of the readme file if you are curious about the new features and technical details of what is new from version 3.6, besides PHP 7 support.

Also, remember that we are now releasing the Community Edition on Github, and no longer making releases at Sourceforge.

Important notes

Please note that, while thoroughly tested, there are many underlaying changes in the code. So if you are upgrading from an older version, it is very important that you follow the upgrade procedure strictly and backup your information.

Enjoy, and let us know how it works for you!

PHP 7 now supported by Feng Office!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2018. By: Conrado Vina

PHP 7 support is here!!!

We have just released the first Feng Office (alpha) version supporting PHP7 (version 3.7.0).

Important:This is still an alpha release. If you are running a production environment please do not upgrade your production environment until thoroughly tested.

PHP7 has been under development many years now. It is not only the most robust and powerful PHP version ever, but it provides increased performance, new capabilities, and prevents issues inherent to older versions.

Also, PHP5.6 (the previous most prevalent version) is nearing the end of its supported life. The latest versions of all Operating Systems are forcing the upgrade from PHP5.6 to PHP7. So not upgrading had become unsustainable.

What has changed in version 3.7

The development work for supporting PHP7 required lots of changes, proving more challenging than we initially hoped it would.

Amongst many changes, there are many functions that have changed either their names, their parameters, or both.

Another one of the biggest changes is the fact that the MySQL (MariaDB) drivers need to be replaced.

Also on the Database side, there were changes introduced on the supported and required values for initializing data.

All of this things are definitively improvements and the process has helped us make a better Feng Office. But Feng Office is a large system with lots of parts. So make sure to do a diligent and thorough testing before you upgrade from a previous version to version 3.7.

Compatible infrastructure

What infrastructure is Feng Office 3.7 compatible with?

This version is being tested with the following infrastructure stack:

  • Web server:
    • Apache2.4
  • PHP:
    • PHP 7.0 and up
    • PHP 5.6 and up (soon to be discontinued)
  • Database:
    • MariaDB 10.1 and up
    • MySQL 8.0 and up
    • MySQL 5.5 and up

Important:The Feng Office team is NOT testing Feng Office 3.7 with other, different infrastructure stack. You are most welcome to do so, and to provide us with any fixes that would help support other stack. If they do not cause problems with our standard, recommended infrastructure we will make our best effort to include it in an upcoming release.

How to help

The most important thing you need to do before rolling out Feng Office 3.7 is test it. At the time of this announcement Feng Office 3.7 is still an alpha release (which means it still requires more testing before it can be).

If you are a subscribed client, please ask us for a complimentary testing copy so that you can test a copy of your production environment.

If you are using the Community Edition you can download it here, and run your own tests. One known issue is that a fresh installation may require you to create the Database prior to running the installation script. We are investigating this issue but if you develop a solution, please do share it with us.

We hope you are as excited as we are with this news!

Feng Office for IQTell users

Tuesday, June 27th, 2017. By: Conrado Vina

Last Thursday we started to see a big spike in our trials – and in the requests to test the e-mail module.

We quickly learned that a fellow software company (IQTell) was planning to shut down at the end of July.

I don’t know the IQTell team personally but I am a big fan of GTD (more on this, and how it influenced a lot of what Feng Office is, on a subsequent post), which a large portion of their community embraces. And when a fellow software company closes down it is never received as good news as we understand too well the challenges of building a successful software company – even if you have a passionate and loyal customer base. And from my conversations with IQTell users they certainly have a passionate community, IQTell delivered excellent support, and its team built an amazing product. We wish everyone in the IQTell team the best of success in whatever endeavors they chose to pursue next.

Many of these users share the same vision we have for the product the team and me have been building for almost 10 years. So for those IQTell users who would like to join us we are offering a 50% discount if they come over before IQTell officially shuts down services at the end of July.

For those IQTell users evaluating Feng Office (you can kick off your own free, 30 day trial here) we are collecting their needs and prioritizing their requests. Our goal is to get us to feature parity as quickly as possible. We will be sharing our plans and additional information with IQTell users on subsequent posts here and through other channels.
