What is a Content Object

As the team has been referring to Content Objects (CO's) throughout the forum, I felt there might be a need to define what a CO is, since it is a term used internally at the core team, but not a formal nor widespread one, and might be subject to different interpretations.

First draft of a definition
A Content Object refers to a piece of Data, independent of its form, that is treated in a similar manner by the system. It is the 'Abstract Class' for Objects like:

• Message
• Contact
  
• File (or Document)
  
• Task
  
• Milestone
  
• Event
  
• And so on...
  

More CO's might be specified, as the system specializes support for other kind of data.

Specializations of a CO (e-mail and SMS specialization of the 'Message Class') are also CO's.

The system treats CO's similarly, with functions that allow all CO's to be viewed, usually edited, have permissions, have properties, be linked, be shared, etc.

IMHO there should be a flexible RSS-element within the system. You could gather all kinds of information - and I am not only talking about news aggregation - that might be nice. But I am also talking about RSS feeds from Twitter or internal microblogging tools like laconica or feeds from Delicious or Scuttle. And you should be able to move the items from the RSS around: make a tweet a note or a move a link from delicious to your own weblinks.

A content object is an occasion of a content class. While the class just characterizes the information structure, it is the content objects itself that contain genuine information. When a content class is characterized, a few substance objects/cases of that class can be made. For instance, if a class for putting away news articles is made; a few article objects (all containing an alternate story) can then be instantiated.
